Hohai University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education with 109 years of history, featuring water conservancy, focusing on engineering and coordinated development of multiple disciplines, and it is a key university for the implementation of the national "211 Project", the construction of the national innovation platform for advantaged disciplines, the construction of the "Double First Class" and the establishment of the Graduate School approved by the Ministry of Education. 

Hohai University was founded in 1915 by Jian Zhang, a famous modern patriotic industrialist and educator, and is the first institution of higher learning to train water conservancy talents in China. 1960, the university was recognized by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as a key university in China, and the traditional name of the university was restored to Hohai University in 1985, and the name of the university was inscribed by Comrade Xiaoping Deng.
